Huipil Hueyi: mexican textile expression at Carpet Diem, Paris

Huipil Hueyi: expresión textil mexicana en Carpet Diem, Paris

Traditional textiles embody far more than a way of dressing. Their patterns, colors, techniques, and compositions carry knowledge passed down through generations, expressions of community identity, and distinct ways of understanding the world.

From this perspective, CARALARGA presents Huipil Hueyi at Carpet Diem Paris 2026, an international gathering dedicated to contemporary textile art. The piece draws inspiration from one of Mexico’s most representative traditional garments, exploring how its forms and visual language can find new expressions in interior design.

From October 23 to 25, Carpet Diem will celebrate its 4th edition at Espace Commines, Paris. The event will bring together 32 textile works by artists from 14 countries in an exhibition conceived as a labyrinth by scenographer Hervé Sauvage. An international platform for discovering diverse approaches to textile creation.

A garment that tells stories.

Worn by Indigenous communities across Mexico and Central America, the huipil is a garment of ancestral origins whose diversity reflects the richness of the cultures that create it. Its forms, motifs, colors and techniques vary by region and community. Each piece can express a distinct identity through the textile knowledge and craft traditions that bring it to life.

More than an aesthetic reference, the huipil represents a way of creating and transmitting meaning through weaving. Its geometric compositions, embroidery and arrangement of motifs form a unique visual language, shaped by the hands that make it and the passage of time.

From Garment to Space.

The Huipil piece pays tribute to the geometric forms and rhythmic embroidery patterns that define this traditional garment. Its visual language is reinterpreted as a textile design conceived to inhabit a space as a wall hanging.

The shift in scale and function opens up a compelling dialogue between two contexts: traditional dress and contemporary interior design. Elements that once belonged to a garment become part of a textile conversation with architecture, furnishings, and the materials that shape a space.

In this reinterpretation, geometry takes center stage. Patterns that once adorned the body extend across a surface, where repetition, proportion, and the arrangement of forms create a new visual reading.

Huipil Hueyi offers a way to engage with traditional mexican textiles through contemporary design, recognizing the value of their visual languages while remaining connected to their cultural context.

Reinterpreting mexican textiles while preserving their roots.

At CARALARGA, textile design begins with the exploration of materials, techniques and forms to develop original pieces for contemporary spaces. Raw cotton thread and the collaboration of many hands through entirely handcrafted processes are central to a practice that seeks to uncover new possibilities in every material.

Cultural inspiration plays an important role in this exploration. Mexico’s artistic expressions, architectural heritage, textile traditions and stories serve as references that can be translated into a distinctive visual language through abstraction, scale and experimentation.

In Huipil Hueyi, this approach takes shape in the connection between the composition of a traditional garment and the presence of a wall hanging. The piece reveals how a textile expression can shift in context and function while maintaining a connection to the forms that inspired its creation.

This perspective also invites us to recognize mexican artisanal design as a practice in constant evolution. Knowledge passed down through handcraft can coexist with new applications, formats, and sustainable ways of integrating textiles into contemporary spaces.

CARALARGA at Carpet Diem Paris 2026.

Since its inaugural edition in Paris in 2023, Carpet Diem has created a meeting point for artists, studios and brands exploring the possibilities of textile design. The exhibition brings together different approaches to the textile surface, presenting it not only as a functional element but also as a medium for artistic expression and design. Since its debut, it has established an international presence while continuing to evolve.

The exhibition invites visitors to experience the pieces from different perspectives, bringing these creative approaches into dialogue. Open to both industry professionals and the general public, it offers a glimpse into the contemporary interior design landscape from around the world.

CARALARGA’s presence at Carpet Diem and within the world of contemporary tapestries offers an opportunity to share a meaningful legacy rooted in Mexico, creating connections between creative perspectives from different backgrounds.

This participation helps strengthen the dialogue around mexican craftsmanship and its relationship with contemporary design, showing how textile knowledge can evolve while maintaining its connection to the cultural references that inspire us.
